Good morning all you wonderful Dog Star Ranch followers out there! With the start of 2012 we have high hopes for a super successful year in the DSR My Way Home Program! Some of our goals...

** Get everything through so that the DSRMWH program will be a 501c(3) and all donations to the program would be taxdeductible.

** Find Miss Nala her forever family and expand on what can do for dogs everywhere. Since the program started we have successfully found homes for 10 dogs! Nala would be 11!

** Finalize the application process and get the DSRMWH program on Petfinder.com. Right now we are working with Pound Buddies and our dogs will be able to found on their Petfinder link until we are able to get our own one set up.

Dog Star Ranch wants to give all dogs somethin' to bark about in 2012! We hope to be able to give so many more happy endings!!

We are in the process of planning our fall event and we would like to invite you all to mark your calendars! This event will be a fun, 1 hour color tour through our ever special Canine Frontier. It will be a great opportunity for DSR staff, members, non-members, and DSR newbies to enjoy a fall day yet support the DSR My Way Home Program. Costumes (humans and canines) are not included, but are encouraged. The cost is $10 min. donation to the DSR MWH program per dog and we hope to see you out with us! This past weekend Dante did a trial weekend with his potential family and it was a success. He now lives on a 30 acre home with a pond for the playing. It is still being debated, but they are thinking of changing his name to Wilson as he always has a Wilson tennis ball in his mouth where ever he goes. Congrats to Dante or Wilson on finding your way home!!

Our My Way Home Dogs got snipped yesterday. Carol dropped them off in the morning and laughed when Nala ran into the clinic while Dante was a little more hesitant. They took it like champs. Nala came running out the same way as she had run in! Dante on the other hand came waddling out and was not to thrilled when he learned he had to get into the van. Carol attempted to help him but like a grumpy old man he slowly made his way up into the van.

They are both recovering well. And the next step for the My Way Home Dogs are finishing up their vaccinations and then finding their FUR EVER Homes :)

They always love new visitors so stop out and fall in love with one (or both) ;)

Don't forget to look to the DSR My Way Home Program. This program works with Vector Control and takes on dogs that need some help, we rehab them, and help them find their way home. We currently have two amazing dogs! Meet Nala and Dante!

After Miss Vela found her new family, Carol and Nick went to Vector in search of our next dog for the program. Dante's eyes and loving personality pulled Carol in right away. She said he was coming with her! She then asked if there any specific dogs that they wanted her to look at and they said yes, please! They then brought Carol to Nala. Nala was a ball of loving energy and thought the perfect place to be was right around your neck like a scarf! Alright, you're coming with us too! So on May 23, 2011 these two joined the DSR My Way Home Program! They were no more than numbers and through our Facebook voting they found their names.

Dante (black) is a lab mix with a sweet, sweet heart! He is a very quiet boy who is very respectful of his basic manners. He would be a lap dog if he could, but will settle for sitting next to you. Want a companion that you can play Fetch with?? This boy is your dog! He will do anything for that tennis ball! Nala (blonde) is also a wonderful girl who wants to be your best friend! She is also very well mannered and loves attention. She no longer thinks she needs to be a scarf, but loves to be with her people. I see a happy career of agility in her future! The blonde is a sweet lab mix female, very puppy personality and the black is a happy lab boy that wants to play with a ball. They will spend their first week at the Ranch getting acclimated to life out of the pound and as we get to know them more we'll share their names and personalities with you! Miss Vela joined our Dog Star Ranch My Way Home program back in February of 2011, but she has been a part of the DSR family since she was a puppy. She started coming to DSR with her prior family as a park member, daycare partipant, and obedience class student. Situations changed with her family and they were no longer able to keep her so we took her into our program. She is a wonderful girl looking, sometimes nicknamed "thunder tail" as it continues to wag whenever she sees someone. She is possibly a boxer lab mix, female spayed, just over a year of age. Meet Miss Vela

Meet our new My Way Home Dog Vela. Many of you may know Vela from the parks or daycare. She is a black and white, possible boxer/lab mix (not for sure), approximately 1 year old, and 40 pounds. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines (through Lakeshore Animal Hospital).
Vela is a very happy-go-lucky and active girl with a generally affectionate disposition toward her family and familiar humans, yet wary of strange humans in her territory. She loves to run and fetch with her chuck it on the beach! Excellent with other dogs and cats, though some cats don't care for her energy! She is very intelligent and quite trainable. Her favorite treats are freeze-dried liver bits and raw meaty bones. She can stay occupied for hours with pork shoulders, ham hocks, beef ribs, lamb shanks, etc.

We would like to re-introduce Miss Molly to the My Way Home Program. This story is one that is close to our hearts at the Ranch. Many of you remember Michelle. She was a part of the Ranch family in our grooming department for several years. Many of you may remember her gentle hands in the grooming room or encountering her out in the parks on her off days with a “Chuck-It” in hand. Before Thanksgiving 2010, Michelle passed away in her sleep, leaving behind her family, friends, and her best companion, Molly. Per the request of Michelle’s family, and knowing that these would be the true wishes of Michelle, Molly has joined the My Way Home Program.

Dog Star Ranch was always like a second home for Molly and Michelle and a place where they shared many happy memories together. Molly has been adjusting very well to her current home at the Ranch and we are to the point that she is ready to join the My Way Home Program and start looking for her new forever home.

Molly is possibly a Whippet Mix, maybe… Michelle used to joke that she was the mix of a Dingo due to some of her quirky physical characteristics. Molly’s birthday is June 2008, she is a spayed female, and appx. 35 lbs. She is very social and has lived in harmony in homes with other dogs (big and small) and cats.

For the monthof January, (starting on January 7th thru the end of the month), the Dog Star Ranch,which is located at 4200 Whitehall Road in Muskegon, is offering FREE doggie daycare on Mondays and Fridays for the PB foster dogs. You can go on either Mondays orFridays or both. This is an AWESOME opportunity for your foster dog or dogs to getadditional socialization and care with an excellent group of caring andknowledgeable people. I took Conrad to DSR for obedience class and many other timesjust to play, so I can say from experience that they have a wonderful,trained staff! A Christmas story that needs to be shared with everyone!!

About a month ago, Steve and Lori had to say farewell to their loyal canine companion, Bart. Bart, the husky, was 11 years old and had spent his life living with Steve and Lori on their farm in Fremont. Towards the end of this life, Bart struggled with diabetes and required insulin injections twice per day, eventually leading to complete blindness in both eyes. After losing this lifelong friend and family member, they began searching the internet and found Mickey through Pound Buddies website. His smile captured their hearts right there and they came out to the Ranch to meet Mickey. They spent some time together out in the Special Use Park and decided that they wanted to try Mickey for a weekend visit. Friday Mickey went with Carol and Nick out to their farm for the first time and instantly felt at home.

Today Lori and Mickey came into the Wag-On-In with great news! He did great in their home and Steve and Lori want Mickey to join them, with Elf (the horse) and 3 cats (LT, Jazz, and Tazz) on their 10 acre farm in Fremont. Carol told Lori that this was the best Christmas gift for our DSR staff and Lori responded that is was the best Christmas gift for her family. Joyful tears followed by a laugh were had by all. Lori got to play with Mickey in the park today with a few Ranch dogs and Star Buddy Tyler before they headed home. If you see them out and about in the parks, definitely make sure to introduce yourself! Mickey may be a Ranch veteran, but Steve and Lori are new and look forward to their adventures in the parks with Mickey.

Hey everyone! This is me, Mickey! I just wanted to say how thankful I am to have a place like DSR that can take care of me and help me find my forever home through their My Way Home Program. They have helped me along the way and have kept me out of the animal shelter. I am making some awesome pals, both canine and human, but I am definitely looking for my forever family and place to call my own home. If any of you are interested in meeting me, please stop by the Wag-On-Inn to do so! We can visit in the office or you can play with me in the parks. That would be a fabulous Christmas wish come true for me to wake up in my own home this Christmas morning! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and thank you for taking the time to read my note. This past weekend, we had Kris Larsen come and test the dogs taking the Advanced Obedience Class for the Canine Good Citizen certification. Of the dogs that passed their test (with flying colors!) two of them started out as My Way Home Rescue Dogs!!! Bear and Murphy both earned their CGC this past Saturday and have hopes of becoming therapy dogs! Another dog that we want to mention is Indy! He started as a foster dog through Pound Buddies and he also found his forever home. He also passed his CGC and is headed towards therapy work!

All of the dogs did wonderful this weekend and we are so very proud of each and every one of them! It just warms our hearts to see a dog that started out on the streets/homeless, find their forever family, then continue to grow in their obedience, and make a difference in the lives of others!

Mickey is our newest addition to the DSR My Way Home Program. Mickey is under 2 years old, male neutered, shepherd mix. Mickey was in a foster home through Pound Buddies for about a year and we thought he would be a good one to bring on to the Ranch. He is great with his manners and socialization. Over this past weekend, Archie found his family! He spent a Happy Memorial Day weekend with Maria, Joel, and his new brother, Sisco. Things have been going really well. Looks like he has made himself comfy! Congrats to Archie!

Archie is a sweet dog looking for his forever family. We believe he is a Swiss Mt. Dog mix, appx. 13 months old and he was rescued from Vector Control last December. Since then he has enjoy being a Ranch dog, but would greatly love a home of his own.

Revamping the program... Archie is still looking for his forever family/home :o)

As most of you know, Mr. Archie has been a part of the Ranch family since Dec. 5, 2009. Carol saved him from an unknown fate and life in the pound. Since his arrival at the Ranch, he has blossomed into a wonderful companion and friend to so many humans and canines. He celebrated his estimated 1 year birthday on April 1, 2010. Archie is still in search of his forever home and family.

In an effort to help him do so, Carol has decided to revamp the adoption process through the My Way Home Program. The adoption fee for a DSR My Way Home pup is an annual membership ($358-$258) with the hopes that he continues to use the parks for many years to come along with a Risin' Star Basic course ($125). That puts the adoption cost at $483-$383. All of the money that is used for Archie's adoption goes back into the My Way Home Program Fund to cover the costs of the next dog. If you (or someone that you know) is looking to add a canine companion to their family, please don't forget about the Dog Star Ranch My Way Home Program. This program is designed to take dogs that are homeless and help them find their forever home. They come to us through Animal Control (Vector Control) and verious rescue organizations in hopes of finding a family that is just perfect for them. The program officially (Carol was doing this long before the program was started but) began with Murphey. He was a boy with some serious seperation anxiety that tried a couple homes and found his way to Cayla where he is healthy and super happy. Next up was Bear. He came all the way from California and it didn't take long for him to fall in love with Pheobe and the Morfords. That brings us to Archie. He's a wonderful boy that came to us from Vector Control. He has been with the Ranch since Decemeber and was neutered in mid-Feb. He is doing excellent on his social skills and general manners. His training will continue once he finds his new family. Archie is great with children and dogs of all sizes. If you want to know more about Archie or the DSR My Way Home Program, just ask or stop on by the Wag-On-Inn to meet Archie for yourself!

To work on Archie's home manners and skills, he's been having some "slumber parties" with Michelle and her dog, Molly. It gives him an opportunity to be a home environment and get a feel for what that's really like. He went from Vector Control to Dog Star so he really hasn't been in a home/house in a quite a while, if at all. He definitely enjoyed it! “Hello. My name is Archie. On December 5, 2009, Carol, Kevin, and Nick came to visit all of the dogs at Vector Control looking for the next dog to add into their new My Way Home program. Carol saw my big dark eyes and told me that she’d be back for me. Sure enough, she kept to her word. That is the day that I left Vector Control and the thought of being homeless behind me and ventured to Dog Star Ranch. What a wonderful experience this has been! Of course, I went to the bath tub first, but it felt so good to be nice and clean. Since then I have been working on my social skills and manners in hopes of finding my forever home. Nick, Kevin, and Tyler are working on a video of me so you’ll get to see me “in action” but if you ever want to meet me, feel free to stop by the office. I will make someone a wonderful companion. Michelle even things I could make it as a therapy dog and visit the hospitals! So keep your eyes peeled for the Blockbuster hit to be released later this week. Until then, I hope to meet you soon and find my way home…”

My Way Home welcomes in 2010!

My Way Home is a fairly new program at Dog Star Ranch and so far so good! We started with MURPHY and he is doing wonderful! He is continuing training classes at the Ranch and bonding closely to his new "mom." We definitely see a bright future in agility for this boy! Next up was BEAR who joined us from California. It didn't take him long to adjust to life in Michigan and he is going really well with his new sister, Phoebe, and the family! Great job Bear! Next up is ARCHIE. He is the current dog in the program. He came to us from Vector Control a couple months ago. He is under a year and his breed is still yet to be determined... maybe a little great dane... lab... swiss mountain dog... hmmm, your guess is as good as ours (that's him in the photo). He is a very sweet, loving boy looking to find his way home. Do you want to know more about Archie? Stop by the Ranch and you can visit with him yourself and get to know him. He will make a wonderful addition to any family. Hopefully, through this program and our many other programs and memberships, we hope to make a difference in the lives of all dogs. We want to give every dog somethin' to bark about in 2010!

Bear (previously called "Rescue" Morford in earlier blogs) comes to us from the California Shar Pei Rescue. He arrived to Michigan on Sunday and he has been adjusting very well. He will be Phoebe's brother and friend. Today he was an excellent helper for Jen and Carol in the front office. All of the Star Buddies would like to welcome him to the program, the Ranch, and Michigan! It will be a Christmas wish come true for this boy...

As Murphey is going through the steps to be with his forever home, we thought we would bring "home" Dog #2! Saturday, Carol, Kevin, and Nick went to Vector Control and picked out this little gem. His name is yet unknown, he was only a number at Vector, so as we get to know him, we'll find a name that suits him. He is about 6 months old, possible Swiss Mountain dog mix (?) with white tips on his nose, toes, and tail. He went right to the tub for a clean up and now we take some time getting to know him. Welcome to DSR!

Murphey takes the next step...

Today marks another step in this great My Way Home program. Murphey is one step closer to having his forever home. Cayla (Carol and Pat’s daughter) has taken a liking to Murphey and would like to make him her very own. While Murphey is still in the care of the Ranch, the “prospective new owner” must take a Basic Class with the trainer (Kevin) at the Ranch to make sure that the fit will be a good one. Kevin has grown to know the dog and knows what he will need in his new owner. Through this class, Cayla can bond with Murphey and build a great foundation in his obedience skills

Murphy is great with all dogs from big to small!! No aggression issues with either dogs or humans. Very social and eager to please. Murphy already has some basic obedience. Recommend new owners to attend a basic obedience class.Main purpose for class will be to build a healthy relationship with Murphy.

Murphey has been doing great. We have given him some adjustment time to get used to his new place and surroundings. Now that he is getting comfortable, Kevin is going to start working with his training and see how he responds. A Fresh New Program at Dog Star Ranch!

Dog Star Ranch would like to introduce you to our new program titled My Way Home. This unique program is unlike any that we have ever done! This program has been designed to take a dog that is currently homeless (from a local animal control, shelter, or rescue) and give it a place to grow and learn as it finds its way home. We will work with the dog to improve its manners through training and socialization, give it the vital tools to be a wonderful “canine citizen,” and place it in its forever home. We will Blog regularly to keep you updated with the progress or status of our current My Way Home dog. As you learn more about these individual dogs and think you might know someone who would be interested, please have them contact the Wag-On-Inn. We are kicking off this program with a special dog named Murphey. Murphey came to us after being returned multiple times to Pound Buddies Rescue. He now resides at Dog Star Ranch and is being personally worked by our trainer and Star Buddy staff. We are working with him on manners and socialization with the goal of finding him the perfect home for him when he is ready. He has only been at the Ranch for about a week and he is definitely starting to get comfortable.
